It is with deep sadness that we received the news of the tragic passing of Professor Pavel Jungwirth (1966–2026), a distinguished physical chemist, a long-standing scientist at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences, and a prominent figure in Czech science.
Professor Jungwirth was an internationally recognised scientist whose research made a lasting impact on modern physical chemistry. His work focused on the behaviour of ions, water molecules and biomolecules in liquid environments, advancing our understanding of fundamental physicochemical processes with important implications for biology, medicine and drug development.
Alongside his outstanding scientific achievements, he was an inspiring teacher, mentor and tireless advocate for science. He had a remarkable ability to communicate complex scientific ideas with clarity and wit, and was a steadfast defender of scientific evidence, critical thinking and rational public discourse.
On behalf of the leadership and all colleagues at the Institute of Molecular Genetics of the Czech Academy of Sciences, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and our colleagues at the Institute of Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
May he rest in peace.
